There is a 50mm f/5.6 SWS lens for sale at KEH.COM for $849.00 (great price!). There are also one 65mm f/5.6 (same price!) and one 65mm f/8.0 ($616.00). Never seen so many wide angles for the G690 series for sale at the same time

Fujinon 50 mm vs other wide lenses

Hello Abbas,
Did you compare 50 mm Fujinon with some wide lenses for medium format cameras, like Mamiya-7 43mm, Pentax-67 45 mm?
Thanks
Mikhail

Mikhail,

I have never used either Mamiya 43mm nor Pentax 45mm, so I am not able to compare image quality of these lenses. They all have a very good reputation, which seems deserved as far as I can tell from the pictures I have seen. Usually "straight" wide angles exhibit less distortion and have better corner sharpness than retrofocus lenses (like the Pentax 45mm). The Fuji 50mm is indeed very sharp on the whole field (even wide open). Like most ultra wide angles, it suffers from moderate vignetting wide open, but I don't find it annoying, except for landscapes on inversible film. Anyway, vignetting is easy to correct with a center filter (expensive) or in Photoshop.

As for field coverage, the Fuji 50mm and Mamiya 43mm have the same 90 degrees diagonal field angle, while the 45mm Pentax is slightly narrower.

Cheers,

Abbas

Thank you, Abbas!
One more (well, a couple more) questions, since I'm seriously thinking about purchasing this lens.
What are the best f-stops for the lens regarging its sharpness? And, did you see a visible image degradation at 1/22-1/32 ?
Thank you again!
Mikhail

You will get excellent results from f/5.6 to f/16 and top resolution at f/8 and f/11. Diffraction is not really an issue at f/22, because of the huge negative size. It becomes visible on large prints at f/32, but I find it much more acceptable than on the 21mm Color Skopar for 35mm LTM cameras at F/22.

Anyway, the depth of field at f/22 should be sufficient for most applications, as it extends from 0.81m (32 inches) to infinity.

Cheers,

Abbas

OK, thanks a lot!
I'll buy one (someone offered me the lens + finder for $ 750, excellent conditions)
It is not cheap for me, but I hope it will hold its value.
Regards
Mikhail

You will not regret buying this lens. If you list it on eBay tomorow with no reserve, I can guarantee you will sell it for more than $1000. But you would be crazy to resell such a fabulous and rare lens

Abbas
